Recognising burnout in business life

Burnout symptoms in entrepreneurs, founders and self-employed professionals

Burnout rarely arrives all at once. In people responsible for a company, a practice or a team, it tends to build quietly over months — and the signs are easiest to address while they are still emerging.

Entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals often experience burnout differently from employees. There is no line manager to notice, no handover to arrange, and a strong sense that the business will not hold together without you. That combination makes it very easy to keep going long after the first signs have appeared.

Emotional signs

  • A flatness where enthusiasm and curiosity used to be
  • Irritability with colleagues, clients or family
  • A sense of detachment from work you built yourself
  • Unease before the working week begins

Physical signs

  • Sleep that no longer restores you, however long you spend in bed
  • Headaches, digestive complaints or muscular tension
  • Frequent minor infections and slow recovery
  • Symptoms your doctor cannot quite account for

Cognitive signs

  • Decisions that once came easily now taking days
  • Difficulty holding attention through a meeting
  • Forgetfulness and a sense of mental fog
  • Doubt about judgement you used to trust

Behavioural signs

  • Longer hours with steadily less to show for them
  • Withdrawal from friends, colleagues and family
  • Setting aside the things that used to restore you
  • Leaning on habits that take the edge off the evening

What tends to help

Recognising the signs is a useful first step; what follows matters just as much. Genuine distance from the business, a thorough psychological assessment, medical care and intensive one-to-one work allow the picture to become clear again — and give new habits the time they need to settle.

Since 2007 we have accompanied entrepreneurs and senior leaders from Europe, the UK and the United States through exactly this. Our work is resource-oriented: it begins with your abilities and your life experience rather than with a diagnosis.
